Wanda Juanita (Burns) Carter, known as Nita to her friends, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 8th, 2022 while surrounded by her family.
Nita was born in 1929 to Arie Lee Burns (1909 – 1974) and Anna Lee Homer (1909 – 1995). Although she was born in Childress, Texas, her birth was recorded in Hollis, Oklahoma, the location of her doctor.
Nita graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1948 and married Charles Henderson Carter, a member of the Air Force, on December 10th, 1952 in Arkansas.
Charles and Nita had three sons; Charles Clark Carter born in 1953, Michael Ray Carter in 1955, and Larry Gene Carter in 1956.
Nita enjoyed traveling the world as an Air Force wife, and lived in many places, including Louisiana, Turkey, New Mexico and Nevada. Charles retired in 1964 and the family settled in Oklahoma City. They later purchased vacation property at Lake Eufaula.
Nita was extremely proud of her gardens, both in the city and at the lake. She received numerous ribbons at the State Fair for both her needlework and her canning. She was also a member of REACT channel 9 and used the handle “Comanche Maid.”
Nita was proceeded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1991 and her beloved son, Chuck, in 2014.
Siblings that proceeded her in death include: Jewell Pauline Burns, Judith Ann Barris and Bobbie Jean Burns.
Surviving family members include: Michael Carter and wife Candice Carter of Moore and Larry Carter of Oklahoma City.
Surviving siblings include: Gerald and Judy Burns of Oklahoma City, Joe and Cindy Burns of Mustang, and Roy and Melissa Burns of Russellville, Arkansas.
Nita’s legacy also includes six grandchildren and fourteen Great-grandchildren.
