Susanna Call Fennema passed away peacefully at her home in Norman, Oklahoma on November 8, 2023 with her loving husband of 48 years, David, by her side.
Susanna was born February 2, 1944 in Bloomington, Indiana to Dean Jackson Call and Susanna “Susie” Call (Gavit). She grew up in Gary and Ogden Dunes, Indiana, surrounded by family who valued intellectual pursuit, honesty, and community.
Susanna’s passion for knowledge and learning led her to study anthropology and to a career as a reference librarian. Beyond helping people, she loved curating the library’s collection of books. She shared this gift with family and friends, and particularly her granddaughters – choosing and inscribing the perfect book they’d never have encountered without her.
She thrived on connection: book clubs, holiday gatherings, trips, dinners with family and friends, and time at home with her loving family, especially her husband, David. All who were lucky enough to know Susanna knew that she loved fiercely and didn’t let a moment pass by without thinking of those she loved. Whether it was thoughtful gifts, warm phone calls, or regular letter writing, Susanna took every opportunity to show and share her love.
Susanna will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dean Jackson Call and Susanna “Susie” Call (Gavit); and father-in-law, Harold G Fennema. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, David Fennema; son, Jeffrey J. (Kyleen) Fennema; grandchildren, Olivia Fennema and Joanna Fennema; brother, Jack (Margaret) Call; nephew, Steven (Courtney) Schwegman; stepbrother, Kin (Pat) Corning; stepsister, Wendy (Denny) Corning; nephew, Patrick Corning; mother-in-law, Jeanette Fennema; sister-in-law, Kathleen Fennema; and many dear friends.
Celebration of Life services will be held in Oklahoma and Bloomington, Indiana. To honor Susanna’s wishes, her family will scatter her ashes in Bloomington, in the beautiful woods that she held close to her heart. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Lawton Public Library or to The Smile Train.
Arrangements are under the thoughtful direction of Moore Funeral and Cremation.
