It is with great sadness that the family of Ruth Evelyn Bass announces her passing on September 6, 2017 at the age of 81. Ruth succumbed to complications related to cancer and was under treatment at Norman Regional Hospital.

Ruth was born Ruth Evelyn Lowery on September 14, 1935 in Oran, Missouri, the daughter of Lester and Lottie Lowery, Ruth, and her brother Claude, grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and she graduated from Central High in Cape Girardeau, and attended Stevens College for one year. Around this time, she met Orville “Sam” Bass, Jr., whom she fell in love with and soon married. They had three children: David Bryan, Julia Anne, and Michael Scott.

Orville was a hotel manager, and as a result Ruth and the rest of the Bass family traveled throughout the United States living in Topeka, Kansas, Montgomery, Alabama, Nashville, Tennessee, Casper, Wyoming, St. Louis, Missouri, Winston-Salem, North Carolina and other places before eventually moving to Norman, Oklahoma in the late 70’s. Shortly thereafter, husband Sam suffered a heart attack, and passed away. With the support of her family, Ruth made Norman her home, and continued a career in book-keeping for both Floyd Bergen Enterprises and McCoy Tree Surgery, where she worked until her retirement in 1997.

Ruth was a lifelong democrat and was a passionate student of the Presidency of John F. Kennedy. She loved the beaches at Panama City, Florida, which she frequently visited while living in Montgomery. Her other passions were music, romantic and suspenseful movies, gardening and a variety of reading interests.

Ruth is survived by her children David, Julia and Michael, daughter-in-law Tracy, and by her grandchildren Alexandra, Michaela and Jason, as well as great grandchildren Uriel and Zylo.

An informal remembrance will be held Sunday September 17 at 2:00 pm at the home of her son Michael Bass at 109 Willoway Drive, in Norman, Oklahoma. Friends and family are invited to honor her memory, and to share stories of her life.
