Robert Lee Horton

March 3, 1950 ~ December 15, 2020 (age 70)

Robert Lee Horton, (Bob), passed away December 15, 2020, with his family by his side. He was born on March 3, 1950, in Memphis, TN and was raised in Clarksdale, MS by his Father O.C. Horton and Mother Sue Francis Horton. Bob graduated from Coahoma County High School, and went on to attend the University of Mississippi. He was president of his fraternity and graduated with a Business Degree in 1972.

Bob was married to Sally Horton on June 16, 1983. He is survived by his two sons, Mark Loren Horton who resides in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Robert Lee Horton II, daughter-in-law Lindsey Brooke Horton, and two grandchildren Harper Laine Horton and Olive Grace Horton who reside in Gallatin, TN. He has a brother John Calhoun Horton who resides in Madison, MS. He adored his golden retrievers, Jamie, Sunny, Erin, Belle, Shadow, and Luke.

Bob had many passions in his life. From family to flying, he made the most of the things he loved. One of his biggest passions was flying. Bob served in the US Air Force for 10 years. He was a Captain and Instructor Pilot. He flew the C-141 and T-38 aircraft to name a few. Bob flew for FedEx for 25 years and served as Captain on the DC-10/MD-11. He was a Flight Standards Manager and Instructor on the fleet. He retired from FedEx in October of 2012.

Another passion of his was camping on the island. He was always taking care of everyone from cooking dinner to stoking the fire at 2 am. He proudly wore the nickname of “Camp Daddy”. Spending time on the island with Bob was a privilege and blessing that family and friends will remember forever.

One of his favorite things to do was vacation in Destin, FL. It’s a trip that he and his family took every summer. As much as he enjoyed them each year, there’s no way he could have known today how much those trips and memories mean to his family. Even after the kids grew up, Bob still continued the tradition of taking those trips with his wife Sally. His youngest son Mark was able to make those memories on one last trip before Bob wasn’t physically able. These vacations will always be remembered fondly by his family.

Bob loved the outdoors and all the activities that went with it. He loved flying and traveling the world. But mostly he loved his family. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, Christian, and great friend. Its the memories of the family trips, the camping, boating, golf, and Christmas mornings that will always bring a smile to those who had the privilege of having Bob part of their lives. Its being a skilled pilot, active outdoorsman, and most importantly, husband and father that will be the legacy he leaves behind. He will be missed by all who knew him.
