Joyce Christine Handley passed away on January 4, 2024, in Yukon, Oklahoma. She was born on December 15, 1938, in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ray and Leona Smith. She attended Horace Mann Elementary School and graduated from Woodward High School, shaping the foundations of her life in her hometown. She married Jerry Handley on August 5 1956. Together they raised three children with boundless affection and dedication, imparting their warmth and creativity into their children’s lives. A woman of many passions, Joyce found joy in simple pleasures. Her love for sewing, arts and crafts, fishing, and beach outings reflected her vibrant spirit and appreciation for life's beauty. Her enthusiasm for the OKC Thunder basketball team was infectious, lighting up many conversations and gatherings with her unwavering support. Her love for arts and crafts, particularly sewing, was her lifelong passion. Joyce's nimble fingers would fashion her children's clothing during their upbringing, and she even adorned her daughter's Barbie dolls with her crafted creations. Animals held a special place in Joyce's heart, especially her affection for dogs. She served as a devoted caregiver for her parents for many years. Her selflessness extended beyond her family; she even moved to Florida at one point, so that she could selflessly care for someone in need, showcasing her innate sense of compassion and empathy. An outspoken and opinionated individual, Joyce was a mama bear in her own right—fiercely protective of those she cherished. Her love for her parents and her brother was boundless, their relationships serving as cornerstones in her life. Her absence leaves a void, but her spirit and the love she shared will continue to inspire and guide those who were privileged to know her.
Joyce is survived by her children, Mark (Carol) Dean Handley, Cindy (Darrell) Jean Stevens, and Tracy Ray Handley; grandchildren, Joshua Handley, Keri (David) Zeder, Robert (Rachel) Stevens, and Kasey Handley; great grandchildren, Noah Zeder, Elijah Zeder, Braelyn Stevens, and Lillian Tober; niece, Shelley Smith; lifelong friend, John Caldwell; along with many additional extended family members and friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Owens and Leona Smith Owens; and brother, Bobbie Smith.
A celebration of Joyce's life will take place at 11am on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Kelham Baptist Church 3400 N. Meridian Avenue, where family and friends will come together to honor her memory. Joyce’s internment will take place later this Spring.
Joyce will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched, forever illuminating their lives with cherished memories and enduring love.
